By Flight: A 35-minute flight from Quito to Coca with Aero Regional or Latam. From Coca, a private transfer (available upon request) covers the final 2–2.5 hours through beautiful landscapes of rainforest, rivers, and small Amazonian towns until reaching the Cuyabeno Bridge.

Upon arrival at “El Puente,” guests enjoy a delicious box lunch before boarding a motorized canoe to travel along the narrow Cuyabeno River. Rain ponchos, life vests, and luggage protection are provided for a safe and comfortable ride. During the 2–3 hour journey, visitors can admire the region’s remarkable flora and fauna on the way to Tapir Lodge.

After reaching the lodge, guests settle into their comfortable rooms. A delicious dinner is served at 7:30 PM. Later in the evening, the naturalist guide offers an introduction to the lodge, the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, and the upcoming activities planned throughout the stay.

The day begins with a healthy, delicious breakfast around 7:30 AM. Afterward, guests head to the pier to pick up rubber boots for the day’s excursion (available up to EU size 45). Depending on the group size, the exploration continues by motorized or paddle canoe.

At around 9:30 AM, the journey continues upstream toward the magnificent Laguna Grande (Big Lake). Along the way, visitors can admire unique flora such as igapó flooded forests and ancient macrolobium trees rising directly from the water, home to bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and cacti.

The tour then continues to a “Terra Firme” forest area for an engaging trek along the Palma Roja trail. A naturalist guide shares insights into rainforest ecology while guests keep an eye out for wildlife. Many species may be observed, including woodpeckers, tanagers, macaws, toucans, and, with luck, several types of monkeys.

A late lunch is served back at the lodge around 2:30 PM, followed by two hours of free time to relax. Around 5:00 PM, the group returns to Laguna Grande for an evening canoe ride, offering more birdwatching and wildlife-spotting opportunities. Swimming in the calm, refreshing waters of the lake is also possible. Weather permitting, the lake is an excellent place to enjoy a stunning Amazon sunset.

After the activity, guests return to Tapir Lodge for refreshing drinks at the bar and time to talk with the guide about the day’s experiences. Following dinner, and depending on weather conditions, the evening may conclude with a short night walk around the lodge in search of nocturnal wildlife such as frogs.

Day 3 offers a rich blend of wildlife encounters and authentic cultural experiences. The day may begin early with an optional 6:00 AM bird-watching excursion, navigating downstream to observe a variety of exotic Amazon bird species before returning for breakfast.

After breakfast, a two-hour canoe journey continues deeper into the rainforest, with chances to spot vibrant Morpho butterflies, different species of monkeys, and other wildlife along the riverbanks. The route passes through Puerto Bolívar, a community of the Siona people.

The next stop is a cultural visit with Thomas, a respected Shaman from the Cofan ethnic group. Known for his knowledge of medicinal plants and traditional healing practices, Thomas welcomes visitors into his home for a box lunch and offers insight into the spiritual and botanical traditions of the rainforest. An optional healing ceremony (approx. 40 minutes) is available for those interested. Locally crafted handmade souvenirs are also available.

The afternoon continues with a visit to a Siona family in Puerto Bolívar, where travelers can observe the traditional preparation of Cassava Bread (Yuca)—a staple food of Amazonian communities. The experience includes peeling, grating, pressing, and toasting the cassava into a delicious warm flatbread, which visitors can enjoy.

After returning to the lodge for an 8:00 PM dinner, guests are invited to enjoy a farewell Passion Fruit Cocktail and meet the staff who ensure exceptional service during the stay. The evening concludes with an optional 50-minute night walk to look for nocturnal wildlife such as tree frogs, spiders, and night monkeys.

Breakfast is served at 7:30 AM. Afterward, departure arrangements from Tapir Lodge are coordinated, usually around 9:30 AM, though this may vary depending on weather conditions and river levels. Lodge staff will assist with loading luggage onto the canoe for the return trip.

The journey continues back to the Cuyabeno Bridge, where the selected transportation option will be ready for the transfer to Lago Agrio, Coca, or Quito. Travelers flying from Coca will follow an adjusted schedule to ensure timely arrival at the airport.

Staff members carefully load the luggage onto the canoe before navigating back to the Cuyabeno Bridge, where the selected transportation will be waiting to continue the journey to Lago Agrio, Coca, or Quito.
